Aluminum

Carbon Materials for Every Ton of Aluminum Produced

Aluminum smelting requires large quantities of carbon anodes and cathode blocks — materials produced from coal and petroleum coke. Every ton of aluminum requires approximately 400–500 kg of carbon anode material. U.S. aluminum producers have faced increasing supply chain risk as carbon material sourcing has concentrated in China. Graphite Electrodes for Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking

Electric arc furnace steelmaking — the dominant method for recycled steel production in the U.S. — requires graphite electrodes as a consumable input. Graphite electrode supply has been subject to severe price volatility and supply disruption.
